EZ Gen~ Tute 004 :: Polymetric vs Polyrhythmic Sequencing

Compressing useful MaxMSP / Gen DSP info into 10 mins is an interesting challenge – so much so that it often takes 20!

EZ Gen~ is a tutorial series encouraging both newcomers to MaxMSP and seasoned Max users (who’ve wanted to get into it but haven’t found that entry point) into familiarity with Gen~ patching, DSP and sample accurate processing.

Back once again into our journey through Gen~ we’re adding two new modes to our step sequencer by adopting some simple principles for generating satisfying rhythmic complexity through phase relationships and note divisions. We use this as an opportunity to disambiguate two often conflated rhythmic structures by working directly with everything we learned last week to implement a Polyrhythmic / Polymetric sequencer mode toggle and polish up some of our UI strategies (just a little) before going deeper into Gen~
